Tutorial IX: Bounce & Burn

Home | Tutorials

This tutorial will guide you through the process of turning the wav files into .aiff files, which can then be burned to CD.
  1. Bounce, bounce, come on, bounce, I said come on, bounce!
    1. "Bounce" is the term used to describe the process of transferring the audio from one format to another.
    2. You will bounce each song / movement / piece separately.
    3. Double click the first wav selection so it is highlighted in its entirety, or use the tool that looks like a little hand.
    4. Select File > Bounce to Disk...

    5. Make sure your window looks like the one to the right
      • Bounce Source: #1/12|888/24(st)
      • File Type: AIFF
      • Format: Stereo Interleaved
      • Resolution: 16
      • Sample Rate: 44100
      • Convert During Bounce
    6. Press Bounce
    7. The program will then ask you to save the file.
      1. Locate the base folder for your project. (The base folder will be named whatever you titled your project in the beginning. Typically, new projects should be saved on the Data Drive.)
      2. Create a new folder inside this folder and call it "Bounced"
      3. Save the first file as "01," the second as "02." This helps keep track of how many you've bounced, and helps preserve concert order when you put the files on a CD. The leading "0" is important so that track "01" will be placed before track "10" alphabetically, etc. You may elaborate with titles after the numbers if you wish.
      4. Save all bounced tracks in this folder.
    8. Now you must wait for the piece to play through.
    9. Once it is finished, highlight the next selection in the performance and go through the same process.
    10. Continue this process until there are no more selections to bounce.
  2. Burn, baby, burn.
    1. You can now quit out of Pro Tools. SAVE YOUR WORK!
    2. Select Apple Menu > Audio > Adaptec Toast (This is what you will use to burn a CD).
    3. Make sure "Audio CD" is select in the small pull down menu right beneath where it says TOAST in big letters.
    4. Click on Audio.

    5. Add Tracks to burn

      • Click on Add (lower left corner of the window).
      • Now you must find where you saved the bounced files. (Typically Desktop > Data Drive > "Your Project" > Bounced)
      • Most commonly you will want to burn all of the bounced files onto the CD. Select Open All.
      • You may also drag all of your files into the box where it says "Drop audio files here," then click on Audio to see your tracks in order.
    6. Adaptec Toast should then open a window like the one below:

    7. Make sure the numbers are in order. If they're not, you can drag the tracks in this window around until they are in the order you want.
    8. Click Done once all files that are to be included on the CD are on the list and in order.
    9. Click Write CD... in the lower right hand corner of the window.
    10. It will then ask you to insert a blank CD. Do so; there should be some in the Project Studio.
    11. Click on Write Disc.

    12. When the CD has completed burning, Eject it.
    13. Normally you will need to burn two (one to the performer and one to the music library). You can burn another one via this method, or duplicate the one you have just made (see Tutorial X).
    14. Generally, you don't need to save your Toast document unless you plan on burning more of these CDs with the computer.
