This tutorial will explain the set up of the mics used in the triangle in Camp to do most of the University Recordings.
- Triangle and Mics
- Above the stage in Camp Concert hall is a triangle that is suspended from the
ceiling.
- Before a concert, it is the Lab Assistant's job to have the triangle lowered and put
the Geffel microphones in place.
- The diagram below allows you to see how the mics should be positioned during a
typical ensemble performance recording (you are standing on the stage facing the
audience):

- The mics should all be at around a 45-degree angle with the triangle, pointing down
at the stage.
- The two side mics should be pointed out a little bit, as to cover the stage.
- Grace Preamp
- The Geffel mics in the triangle go through the Grace Preamp before their signal
reaches the lab. (This is how they are powered)
- There is a switch that looks like a light switch located on the wall just above the
O2R boards.
- Turn this switch on to turn the Grace Preamp on. Be sure to turn it off when you
are through recording.
- Controlling the Grace Preamp

- Turn the Black Rack on.
- The Grace Preamp Control Module is located on the little shelf in the Black
Rack. (see picture above)
- You will only use the first 3 channels because there are only three mics in the
triangle.
- Use the Data Wheel to select a channel. You can tell that a channel is
selected when there is a black box in the lower left hand corner of the channel
column.
- Push the Data Wheel to actually select the channel.
- The phantom power must be turned on for each mic.
- Select channel 1.
- Press the 48v button.
- 48v should appear in the left side of the channel column.
- Do the same for channels 2 & 3.
- When a channel is selected, you can turn the Data Wheel to change the level of
the mics.
- Make sure you adjust all the levels accordingly for the performance. DO NOT change these levels during the performance unless the Grace preamp itself is clipping. If the recording is too hot, turn the faders on the mixer down instead.
- MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT CLIP.
- Typically the dB levels should be somewhere between 16.4 and 26.9 depending on
the size and loudness of the ensemble being recorded. Be sure to monitor the
levels during the recording.
- Into the Board
- The signal from the three mics from the triangle is sent automatically to three
channels on the board.
- The signal comes in on channels 9, 10, and 11.
- Reset the Board
- If signal does not come through, try to reset the board.
- Select Scene Memory from the Digital Display Panel. Make sure you are on
screen 1/5.
- Use the O2R Wheel to select "2:Board Reset."
- On the right side of the board, just above the cursor and O2R Wheel are four
buttons that look like another cursor. It is labeled as Scene Memory.
- Press the "Recall" button.
- Faders 9, 10, and 11 should go up and you should be receiving signal from the
triangle mics.
