Tutorial XII: Burning CDs

This tutorial will guide you through burning your own CDs using the internal burners in the lab computers.


To burn an audio CD:
  1. Open iTunes
    1. Click on the apple in the upper left hand corner of the computer screen.
    2. Select the "Audio" folder.
    3. Select the application "iTunes".


    4. (If the "iTunes software license agreement" window pops up, click on "Accept")
  2. Compile Your Files
    1. From audio CD
      1. Insert a prerecorded audio CD - the CD you want to copy (open CD tray by pressing the key in the top right hand corner of your keyboard - it looks like a house!!) iTunes should automatically read the CD's contents The CD will show up in the Source window in the left part of the iTunes screen. If iTunes should appear like this:


      2. Click the box in the upper right hand corner to expand the window.
      3. Create a new folder in the "Source" window by clicking the "+" icon in the lower left hand corner of the iTunes window - name the newly created folder accordingly.


      4. Click on the CD icon in the "Source" window to view its contents.
      5. Select which songs you would like to be on your CD. You can listen to the song by double clicking it.
        (Tip: Make sure the CD title is highlighted to view its contents)
        (Tip: To select more than one track in a row, click on the first track you wish to copy, hold the "shift" key, and click on the last desired track. Then drag the group into your folder)
        (Tip: To select more than one track, but they are not in a row, hold down the open apple button located next to the space bar on your keyboard and click on the desired tracks. Then drag them into your folder)


      6. Drag the desired track(s) from the CD track list into your newly created folder: it may take a few moments to copy the track(s). (Tip: you can stop the importing process by pressing the "x" in the top window)


    2. From Library
      1. Create a new folder (see 2. a. ii.)
      2. Click on "Library" in the "Source" window on the left side of your iTunes window.
      3. Drag the desired track(s) into your folder.
    3. From Hard Drive
      1. Drag the desired audio files from the Hard Drive to your folder
      2. A reference window might appear. If it does, click OK.


    4. IT'S BURNING, IT'S BURNING!!!
      1. Click on your folder that now contains the audio tracks you wish to burn. All tracks in your folder will now appear.
      2. Click on the circular icon above "Burn CD" in the upper right hand corner on the iTunes window.
      3. iTunes will then ask you to insert a blank CD, do so.
      4. After inserting your blank CD, wait a moment and click on the "Burn CD" icon again.
      5. (Note: only tracks that have their boxes checked will be burned to the CD - you can request not to include a certain track by unchecking the box.)
      6. When finished, remove your CD from the drive.

    To burn a data CD:
    1. Select "Finder" from the upper right hand corner task-list.


    2. Insert blank CD. Prepare the CD for desired media (for data CDs, choose standard). The image of the CD will appear on your desktop.


    3. Drag desired folders and/or data onto the CDR icon on your desktop.
      1. You can check what you've dragged by double clicking on the CDR desktop icon.
      2. When finished, drag the CDR desktop icon into the trashcan to begin the burning process.
      3. Select Burn.
