This tutorial will help start you on your ear training journey with Practica Musica.
- Getting Started:
- First you are going to access your file server off of Igor. Please refer to the "File Server" tutorial to learn how to do this.
Once your file server is loaded onto the desktop, please continue on.
- Right click (or hold down "control" and click) on the "Audio & MIDI" folder (the orange one) located on the dock.
- Select "Practica Musica".

- When Practica Musica first opens, you will be asked to open a file. The screen will look similar to the one below.
- If you've loaded your file server correctly, it will show up under "Macintosh HD" in the upper left corner of the "open" window.
- Click on your file server and you will see a file with your name followed by ".stu" (this is the file extention given to Practica Musica files).

- Click on your ".stu" file and then click "Open".
You'll notice that that last option in the menu bar at the top of the screen should now be your name.
You can view your progress report via this menu.
- Setting up sound:
- Be sure that your "Audio MIDI Setup" preferences are correct.
- In the menu bar, select Options > Sound options > Sound and MIDI settings...

- In the middle of that screen, be sure that the box next to "MIDI keyboard is a 'controller.'" is checked.
This will allow you to actually hear what you're playing on the keyboard.
- Doing the Activities:
- From the "Activities" menu, you can choose the appropriate activity.
(Ignore the first option "1.01 Pitch Reading" in the 109 folder)

- Unless you're just doing these excersizes for fun, be sure that you're doing the Activites that your professor has asked you to complete.
- After you've chosen the appropriate activity, you'll see another menu option appear at the top of the screen.

- Choose the level of the activity that you'd like to work on.
- You may quit at any time and your progress is automatically saved.
You can check your progress at any time by clicking on your user name in the menu bar and selecting "View Progress Report".
