This tutorial will get you acquainted with the Kurzweil K2500 RS Unit, a MIDI device which is controlled by your keyboard, and several pieces of software that are used in the lab. Finale, Practica Musica, and Digital Performer are examples of such software.
The Kurzweil is a synthesizer, and contains many internal sounds for your use. The unit can also be used as a sampler, where you can load your own sounds and control them via MIDI. Click here for more info on MIDI .
There are 16 channels available on the K2500. You can program each channel to a different sound.
- You can change the selected channel using the channel bank buttons located on the left side of the unit.
- In the upper right hand corner of the K2500's screen, you can see what channel you are currently using.
- You can change the instrument programmed to each channel by using the directional arrows, + or - buttons, or the wheel. You can also type in the instrument number directly on the number pad next to the wheel.

To receive sound from the K2500, turn up channels 1 & 2 on your station's mixer. (All audio from the K2500 comes through these 2 channels).
Test the sound:
- Notice the number pad to the right of the wheel on the Kurzweil console.
- Hold down the Cancel button and press any of the 12 buttons above it
(0-9, +/-, CLR) to get a different pitch.
It is also possible to alter each pre-programmed sound. For more information see the manual located on the second shelf of the reference material bookcase next to the piano.
