File Server

This tutorial will instruct you on how to log in to your personal accounts on Igor and Vera.

When you log in to a workstation, your personal account authenticates off of Vera (another computer that holds all of the vital information about the Music Technology Lab). Igor is still available to those students who have data saved there.

  1. In the Finder menu, click on "Go" then "Connect to Server..." (or you can hold down the apple key and click "K").
  2. You are now asked to enter in the "Server Address".
    • Igor: If you are one of the students that has data still saved on Igor and you need to access it, type "igor" in the "Server address" field and click "Connect". You will then be asked to type in your name (first letter of your first name, first seven letters of your last name) and your password (originally your SS# unless you changed it).
    • Vera: Because you've technically already logged into vera when you first logged in, you will not be asked for a password again. Simply type "vera" in the "Server Address" field and click "Connect".
  3. When connecting to Vera, you are given 4 options:

    • Dr. Broening's Drop Box: Select this and Dr. Broening's Drop Box will be mounted on your desktop. Open it and you will see a folder where you can drop your assignments. Once you have place your assignment here, you may not open up this folder to edit it.
    • home: Select this and the home share will be mounted to your desktop. Inside you will find a list of all the users in the Music Technology Lab. You may access their drop boxes this way. Please see "Drop Box" below for more information.
    • *username*: Select this and your user share will be mounted to the desktop. This is the same directoy as the one that is currently found in your Finder in the Station that you are working on.
    • Music 213: Select this and the Music 213 class share will be mounted to your desktop. You need not worry about this unless you're in Computer Music. This is a public share where Dr. Broening can place files for you to download and you can place files to be shared with the rest of the class.
  4. Drop Box:
    • Mount the "home" share when you connect to vera.
    • Open it, and you will see a list of folders for each user that has logged in to the muselab at some point. You only have full access to YOUR folder.
    • Each person has a drop box where you can place files for them to look at, modify, or use for whatever reason. Open up the user's folder.
    • Open up their "Public" folder and inside you will see a folder called "Drop Box".
    • Place the item(s) you wish to share in this folder for that user to see.
    • Remember, once you've dropped it in, you can not go back into their folder to modify or edit it. You may however modify your copy and drop in the new version if you so choose to.
